Cold email for podcast agencies.

This is the cold email plan we'd run for a podcast agency that serves one industry. Podcast histories are public. Listen Notes and Podchaser show when a show started and when it stopped and who has been a guest.

Part 01

Is this for you?

Part 02

Your market.

Your market is every company in your industry that sells on trust and relationships. A podcast lets them invite the exact people they want to meet onto a show.

These are the signals worth looking for.

  1. 01

    Shows that stopped

Listen Notes and Podchaser show the date of the last episode. A show that stopped after a dozen episodes usually ran out of time and not out of ideas.

  2. 02

    Frequent guests with no show

Search their founder on Listen Notes. Someone who guests on other podcasts a lot clearly likes the format and has no show of their own.

  3. 03

    Shows with no clips

A show that publishes full episodes and nothing else. No clips on LinkedIn and no written summaries on their site.

  4. 04

    Competitors with shows

A rival with a regular show is meeting the same buyers week after week.

  5. 05

    Irregular publishing

Episodes that come out whenever someone has time. Gaps of a month or more between episodes are easy to spot.

Part 03

Segments.

  1. 01

    Stopped shows

Lead with the date of the last episode.

  2. 02

    Frequent guests

Lead with their best guest appearance.

  3. 03

    Shows without clips

Lead with a clip you cut from their latest episode.

  4. 04

    Competitors with shows

    Lead with the rival's show.

  5. 05

    One sub-industry at a time

A wealth manager's show and a software founder's show book very different guests. Keep them in separate campaigns.

Part 04

Lead magnet.

  1. 01

    The relaunch plan

Ten episode ideas for their show with a named guest for each. Pick guests their buyers would want to hear from and ideally guests who could become clients.

It works because the guest list is the business case. The next step is someone booking and producing those episodes.

  2. 02

    The clip pack

Short clips cut from their latest episode with captions and ready to post.

It works because they see their own show working harder than it does today. Making clips each week is part of the service.

Part 05

Front end offer.

  1. 01

    One episode produced free

Produce their next episode free. Book the guest and write the questions and edit and publish it. They just show up and talk.

It works because the host only spends an hour on it. They see the whole service in one episode and the next ones are the retainer.

Aim to publish within three weeks so the guest's schedule has room.

Part 06

The emails.

  1. 01

    The stopped show email

  2. 02

    The guest email

  3. 03

    The direct email

Swap {{proof_line}} for one real result of your own. A guest who became a client. If there is no result yet then leave the line out.

  4. 04

    The follow ups

    • Follow up one. Send one clip. "Cut a clip from your last episode. It's the bit about {{topic}}."
    • Follow up two. Offer the episode. "Still happy to produce your next episode free. We book the guest and you just talk."
Part 07

The list.

The host is usually the founder or a partner. Email them directly. At bigger companies copy in the head of marketing.

Part 08

After they reply.

How much to expect.

Results depend on the offer and the list. Three outbound agencies that publish their own numbers land between one booked meeting per 1,000 people contacted and one per 2,000. One of them also tested 650,000 cold emails with a plain offer and got about 3 to 6 interested replies per 10,000 people.

Those are other people's numbers and not a promise about your market. Your market's number only comes from testing it.
